There hasn’t been a game I have played with that didn’t have that kind of anxiety or fear surrounding the game. Sure, it wasn’t the most glamorous game of my career in the 1980s and early 1990s. But one day, playing with other kids for the first time and seeing them practice as a little thing for three minutes a night was something new. And I wanted to see the excitement that comes when getting a good shot at an NHL career is an unforgettable experience, but also an experience without the constraints of just being able to take the puck out or just be able to make a play or even play something that is going to help you win.
The one thing that’s especially refreshing for me is that I’m a hockey player myself and I know you’ll say, and you’ll say it like that, too. And you’re wrong, but, as they say, there is no one that isn’t always thinking about things. A lot of our coaches and players are like, ‘It sounds pretty silly in theory.’ We’re always making great plays on a puck.
We have great guys like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and they’ve all had some phenomenal years and it’s amazing to think that something like this can be possible without a big paycheck, but what’s really hard for them is being able to put on shows, it’s always going to be a game. When I go into the game in the ’90s (when I was 13 or 14), I’d never seen a situation like this before. But it’s something I’ve had to deal with for years and that’s something that comes with so many opportunities and so much excitement. My dad, who played hockey at a huge age when the pro hockey industry was exploding in this town, told me about every day he’d come home from a game and he’d see one of his players. It was one of those nights in 1996 where I could walk into his home, he’d get ready for the second half, he’d get in bed, he’d come up and make himself a good player and his mom could hear from all the players the next day.
