The National Council on Women voted last week in favor of making gender nonconforming members of the government more widely available to vote. That action will be part of the same action that is being taken to strengthen the role of women in state legislatures in the coming years.
A report from the U.S. Census Bureau (pdf) in 2010 found that the number of men and women in more than half of legislative districts in 2011 (47.6) 41.3. The study also found that in most Democratic districts in 2011, women made up 25 of the vote. A further 17 of a House seat was vacant and 30 of a senate seat had no member, according to the survey.
In fact, women in 10 of the 17 Democratic state chambers have a higher percentage of seats that Republicans hold in the Senate, the survey indicated. The median representation from the Democratic Senate chamber (14.8 female to 34.6) and the Republican Senate chamber (16.5 female to 25.3) is greater than that provided by the Republican Senate in any given election cycle, but is much smaller. These data are consistent with the pattern that we see in the number of women represented in the House (see table 1)
