The Washington Post (1 December 2017)
On this day in 1858, two men, the last of three American Presidents, meet with two Indians in the southern Indian settlement of Lufkin. The Indians say that they were first seen and taken from the settlement in 1787, in which they were shot and murdered. In their story, one is an Indian warrior who helps to manage the settlement, and the other an Indian priest. After the murder, the men were buried inside a wooden mound that has been placed there since 1787, some 12 feet wide, and another 12 feet tall. Their final resting place is just outside the settlement’s walls. The burial is an important document in history, and it has helped preserve the ancient records of the settlement.
The U.S. Army killed many Indians. But few scholars seem to be able to make sense of how the fate of the Indians, and the fact that they were murdered, were handled by U.S. military personnel. As an example, this story is not about how the soldiers or the locals of the settlement had been attacked by a race of savage animals in search of food, shelter and recreation – one of many reasons that historians tend to blame the Indians for their destruction of the town. It is not even about who they may have been, nor when and how a land or people was taken. Rather, it is about how the killings led to a policy of brutality and subjugation of the indigenous people, which we will see in a moment.
The Army of the Army of Ohio shot and slaughtered the three men who were said to have taken them from the settlement and buried them at a nearby burial ground. The Indians were not only unarmed, but they lived in fear of them. They lived in fear of being taken again and again from their home lands.
The only way to truly understand how both the Indians who shot and killed the three men, and the soldiers who led them, carried out their murderous actions is to understand their experiences. They knew precisely what the United States was capable of executing to stop the Indians’ enslavement of us that they had been chosen to kill an entire people
