A new analysis of the health impact of low-density diets from a European study in Portugal found a clear association between high fat and obesity in young adulthood in a cohort of middle-aged males and their offspring.
Researchers surveyed 27 children born in a high-density diet in the rural city of Arvela, and found that for the entire birth cohort, high-density diets improved weight control.
The authors suggested that low-density diets were associated with a reduced number of non-diabetes diagnoses in older and healthier children and that high-density diets may indeed be associated with a positive health effect.
The study’s preliminary findings, published online June 20, 2013 in the journal BMJ, suggest the findings may be applicable to older children who are less risk-averse, so in the long run this may be more relevant to the study population.
