On Friday, the Christian Broadcasting Network reported that Pope Francis’s invitation to gather with a Vatican representative was met with a lunacy that included accusations of Vatican meddling in the election and political manipulation by members of the Catholic hierarchy.
That lunacy will be a major topic of debate this week as the Vatican, as well as many other Western bishops and other Vatican bodies, continues to try to work out how it can best respond to what it sees as some of the most serious abuses at the hands of the country’s papacy.
On Friday, Vatican spokesman Cui Tian told CNA that a lunacy was a case of a man in the dark.
For all the accusations against the pope, this is not about what the pope has said about the church, or about his position, he emphasized.
The Vatican on Tuesday said Pope Francis has not publicly expressed in any way what he considers to be a threat to the integrity of the papacy.
Some media outlets reported that the Vatican had sent several media representatives to Vatican City to meet as a possible alternative to the meeting with the pope.
The Vatican Council on Catholic and Religious Freedom has yet to respond to those reports.
