Cravings for food might be more common with anorexia nervosa-like food, though, according to the journal Eating Disorders by Dr. J.B. Gollancz from Baylor University and colleagues (PDF). Studies and evidence that people with the disorder are more likely to become obese have been mixed there’s more research on why it’s the way it is, but there’s little research suggesting that it’s directly related to anxiety.

To that end, Gollancz and co-authors recently used the cognitive behavioral (CBT) test to test what people are thinking when their eating patterns are disrupted, and found that people who get anxious when they go through an extreme weight loss can shift to eating more to maintain normal weight once they start feeling depressed, according to the study.

One caveat not all people who get anxious are cognitively anxious at the end of their lives, and there are many people who don’t suffer from such problems. If everyone becomes anxious, they might be better off going back to eating the way they were in elementary school, or if they’re now depressed, getting more out of their lives.

There is no clear scientific evidence on this, Gollancz and his co-authors wrote. There might be some anecdotal evidence about people with a condition that’s been documented in clinical trials as having no negative associations.

The researchers were also interested in the impact of weight loss on appetite and motivation and the effects of exercise on people’s metabolism, as well as their body temperature, brain function and how people are responding to physical activity.

Weight loss is a necessary part of living well in an eating disorder regime, said Gollancz, who is also a researcher at the University of Maryland’s Center for Health. Being a physical person has other advantages for you, too, especially when it comes to having healthy levels of insulin resistance, mood, and body weight.
